reading series & community engagement

Art and community are inextricably linked. My goal is make attending poetry readings and volunteering with friends at a community garden an extension of the art-engaged classroom.

Reading Series: I have curated three poetry reading series: The Big Big Mess in Akron, Ohio from 2011-2012, Dear Marge, Hello in Tallahassee, Florida from 2013-2014, and The Stokes Center for Creative Writing Visiting Writers Series in Mobile, Alabama from 2016-2017.

Community Engagement:

At Georgia Tech, my poetry courses regularly engage the culture and politics of Atlanta communities and organizations. Through these courses’ affiliations with our Serve-Learn-Sustain program, my students have volunteered at urban farms in Atlanta, visited the Center for Civil and Human Rights, met with leaders of community-based advocacy organizations like the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance, Innovation Law Lab, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, and participated in peer workshops on equity, sustainability, and infrastructure.
